My PMS Story

I have struggled with moderate PMS for most of my adult life—mood swings, irritability, cravings, fatigue, breast tenderness, depression, and acne. These symptoms would creep up seven or more days before my period, leaving me miserable as I dreaded its arrival. And when my period finally came, it wasn’t much better—heavy bleeding for at least two days, painful cramping, and clotting. Bowel movements were also painful, and I was often constipated. On top of that, I experienced unusual spotting between my period and ovulation. Ladies, maybe you can relate.

When I started learning about metabolic health and how I could improve my diet and exercise, I imperfectly began the journey. Cutting out sugar and bad oils, along with incorporating short fasts, led to a huge shift in my PMS and periods. As weeks turned into months, I noticed my symptoms either minimized or disappeared altogether. I don’t want to oversimplify the hard work it took to transform my health, but these changes weren’t about perfection. Sure, I broke a fast with tortilla chips and indulged in sugar more times than I’d like to admit. But I was shocked at how quickly my body responded in a positive way, even with imperfect efforts.

My cravings dropped significantly, and the better I ate leading up to my period, the better it was. The heavy bleeding lessened, clotting reduced, and constipation was no longer an issue. Painful bowel movements disappeared. My mood stabilized, and I felt much less irritable. Energy is still a challenge, as I am practically anemic, but I’m working on that. I also supplement with bioidentical progesterone in my post-ovulation phase, as I have always had low progesterone levels. (Reach out if you want to learn more about progesterone support!)

This transformation in my cycle and period is what inspired me to become a hormone coach—to better understand how our bodies are designed to do everything possible to keep us alive and thriving. Our bodies have the ability to heal themselves; we just need the time, knowledge, and motivation to take that first step toward better health.
