Sarah’s fight for treatment—From failed IVF to endo surgery

I began working with Sarah in March of 2023. She and her husband had been struggling with infertility for over eight years. In 2020 and 2021, she had undergone two unsuccessful IVF procedures. Determined to uncover the root cause of her infertility, she went searching for a natural method, and sought me out to gain deeper insights into her reproductive health.

Sarah was a busy professional with a demanding career and significant stress. She also struggled with food sensitivities, experiencing stomach pain that limited her diet to only basic and bland foods. Despite her efforts, she found it difficult to gain weight and consistently maintained a low BMI. Additionally, she experienced four mild to moderate PMS symptoms each cycle.

Before undergoing any surgical procedures, Sarah’s doctors had no explanations for her fertility concerns. Their only recommendation was to attempt IVF. When she raised the possibility of endometriosis, it was quickly dismissed, and IVF was offered a third time. For years, she continued to face infertility, a low BMI, and persistent digestive issues.

As we worked together, tracking her data through cervical mucus observations, it became clear that she exhibited signs of low progesterone. This was evident in the days of spotting leading up to her period. Further along in the treatment process, bloodwork confirmed our observations—her progesterone levels were low and essentially flatlined. Additionally, her estrogen levels were nearly double what they should have been. A clinician also identified elevated prolactin levels. Sarah committed herself to her treatment plan, working diligently to address these imbalances.

A full year passed, and while her hormone levels and observations showed improvement, she still had not conceived. As treatment progressed, it was recommended that she explore surgery for endometriosis. However, in Calgary, the wait time to see a specialist was 12-18 months, and from that initial appointment, it would take another 13 months from the time of referral.

Unwilling to wait any longer for proper care, she pursued a consultation with a NaPro Medical consultant and surgeon in St. Louis, which took only three months. Within three months of her initial meeting (October 2024), she underwent surgery. The surgeon thoroughly examined and excised endometriosis, removed lesions and scar tissue, and ensured her reproductive organs were functioning properly.

Following the surgery, Sarah’s health transformed. Her four PMS symptoms were reduced to just one mild symptom. Her appetite returned, and she was eating more than ever before. Her digestive issues were resolved completely. Most importantly, her stage 3 endometriosis was successfully treated.

After struggling with unexplained infertility for over 9.5 years and enduring two failed IVF cycles, she finally received the care she needed. Her surgeon is optimistic that she will conceive within the year.

Sarah took control of her health and surrounded herself with clinicians who prioritized her health and uncovered the root causes of her reproductive challenges. No one will do the work for you—you must learn about your cycle, understand what it reveals about your overall health, and make informed decisions based on your fertility goals.
